Muse Are Rock Gods

As a father of two young children and husband to a woman who likes a quiet house, I do my LOUD music listening in the car.

Every so often I hear a song that’s so good it makes me pull over in awe, ecstasy, tears or some other form of driving paralysis.

The last time (before this time) it happened was my first listen to The White Stripes’ “Icky Thump.” I just couldn’t believe the way it sounded and further couldn’t believe something so bizarre was in heavy rotation on commercial radio.

A few days ago I was driving into Seattle across the 520 floating bridge when a song came on the radio that I’d never heard before and that completely blew me away.  I didn’t think anyone made rock music like this anymore…bold, expressive, unpredictable and virtuosic.  It was Muse’s “Knights of Cydonia.”  I bow down to Muse.

I have this CD by Muse with the song Apocalypse on it, which kicks ask, but i also couldn’t help noticing the vocals resemble heavily those of Radiohead- d’you think? I was torn, thinking “can I love these guys, or not?” Wondering what you think about that….
I love the White Stripes too- have you heard their version of “Jolene”? I love the drums which make the song different from Dolly’s version.

The huge difference between Muse and Radiohead is that Muse convincingly and un-ironically full-on ROCKS. Radiohead does a lot of things but to me they don’t ever ROCK. They are always too self-conscious.

Jack White is God and Jesus. Meg White is the Holy Ghost.

Muse are TOTAL GODHEADS. My favorite band. Saw them live in 2007 and they were by far the BEST band I’ve ever seen live. Bellamy’s guitar playing is unbelievable. And while I do see the similarities in his voice and Thom Yorke’s, I actually hear more Jeff Buckley in Bellamy’s singing.

Dave, if you liked “Knights of Cydonia,” some of their other songs will blow you away even more… “Hysteria,” “Exo-Politics,” and “Invincible” are maybe my three favorite songs.

I think Jack White’s venture with The Raconteurs is a great example of a group that rocks hard with a high degree of musicality. Not a single dull song on either of their albums.

Still, though, nothing will ever ROK me like Boll Weevil and Dune Buggy.
